Abstract: Driving and built-in GPS usage habits of Romanian
drivers Taking certain aspects (such as travel time and length) into
consideration, route planning is an important component of people
transportation, especially if it takes place in an unknown area. Some still use
traditional, paper-based maps, but the popularity of electronic systems (PDA/PNA,
phone applications, built-in GPS systems) has grown enormously nowadays. Of
course, different devices are needed in car transport, such as e.g. during a
walk (higher speed requires faster response time), so devices designed for
different purposes also have different looks and user interfaces. There are
several manufacturers currently on the market that develop in-car navigation
devices - in our research we were interested whether they are built according to
the user needs or not and under what circumstances (how much, where, how many,
how) do drivers travel by car. To evaluate this we created a Google Form, which
was completed by more than 400 people in Romania. In the questionnaire, we asked
drivers about their driving and car navigation habits and created an “ideal”
user interface based on the answers: the respondents indicated what
functions/buttons they would like to see on their own navigation system if they
could create their own personal user interface..
